SIGMA KAPPA SORORITY
Phoenix Alumnae Chapter Philanthropy
Sigma Kappa Philanthropies include:
  • Gerontology: In 1954 Sigma Kappa became the first national sorority to recognize the need for continued, comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of elderly population.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease: In 1964 Sigma Kappa responded to an increasingly critical problem facing older Americans by adding Alzheimer’s Disease research and education to its philanthropic activities.
  • Inherit the Earth: This program ties Sigma Kappa’s interest in older citizens with its interest in the environment and working to improve local environments.
  • Maine Sea Coast Mission: Since 1918 Sigma Kappa has paid homage to its Maine roots by supporting the activities of the Maine Sea Coast Mission, which delivers critical services to people in need while striving to redress the root causes of those needs.
For the past two years the Phoenix Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter has hosted successful Ultra Violet dinners to raise money for philanthropy. In 2010 the Alumnae Chapter raised $222.54 dollars and in 2011 the Alumnae Chapter raised $107.95. Another Ultraviolet event is planned for 2011-2012, so check the calendar and clear your schedule so that you can attend!

In December the local alumnae gather for the annual Make It Bake It Sew It Grow It. Each person that attends brings an item that she made or baked. The items are auctioned off, and bidding has on occasion created some friendly heated attention. This event raises money for both philanthropy and sending delegates to Convention.
Every year the Phoenix Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter supports the memory care unit of the Friendship Village in Tempe, Arizona. The local alumnae has made assorted flower arrangements and donated them to the residents, and have visited with and played bingo with the residents.

The Phoenix Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter supports the Maine Sea Coast Mission in a variety of ways. The chapter has collected and donated toiletries, has bought stamps that benefit the mission, and this past year the Phoenix Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter donated the most gift cards for District III in the Maine Sea Coast Mission Contest.

Every fall the Phoenix Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter walks in the local Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The local alumnae solicit donations and walk as a group to show their support. Additionally, the philanthropy chairperson coordinates a garage sale where the proceeds benefit the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This past year the alumnae group raised $1203.16!
